The world has a big problem coming its way. According to human resources expert Rainer Strack of The Boston Consulting Group, there will be a global resource crisis by 2030. That means there will be far too few employees to fill the world’s available jobs. It won’t be a sudden crisis. It’ll be a slow process that is already starting to happen as Baby Boomers retire.
As the spouse of an airline employee, I’ve taken my fair share of last-minute trips. We were always hesitant to book a hotel in advance since we never knew for certain if we were going to get on our desired flight. And once we did get seats on a flight, the excitement of holding our coveted boarding passes was often quickly tempered by the realization that we had about the length of the jet bridge to quickly find a hotel. Las Vegas, aka Sin City, is a Mecca for gamblers and vacationers alike. The city has become one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is also one of the top three U.S. locations for conventions and business meetings. Since many of us have been there (oftentimes more than a few times), I’d like to look at Vegas from a different angle, one that highlights the “other things” one can do while visiting.
A few months ago, our family took a weekend trip from Dallas to New Orleans to meet up with some of our extended family. Fly standby to New Orleans on Friday afternoon using my wife’s airline-employee flight passes, get a cab to the hotel, fly home on Sunday morning. That’s not exactly how things turned out.
Paris, known as the “City of Light”, is home to over 2 million people with a metropolitan population of over 12 million. It is one of the world’s centers for culture, the arts, business, and tourism. It is actually the most visited city in the world. I’ve been there myself 5 times over the past 47 years and still only scratched the surface on the sights of Paris.
